Exactly 100 years ago Emperor Franz Joseph I laid the foundation for the TMW, which is now one of the largest technology museums in Europe. At the time of its founding, steam engines were still puffing through the city and not every resident had electricity at home – something we can’t imagine today.
The Technisches Museum Wien examines the evolution of technology while also looking at its influence on our daily life, the economy and even culture. From the propeller plane to the computer chip, from the gas lanterns of Vienna to the inner workings of a power generating station, the TMW is packed with exhibits large and small. Numerous experiment stations provide opportunities for hands-on learning as visitors engage in a multimedia journey through the history of technology up until the present day – and get a glimpse of our prospective future. And this is precisely where tonwelt comes in: with the ultramodern next generation of the personalguide av, arriving just in time for the TMW’s 100th anniversary! In addition to audio commentaries in German and English visitors can also display images and films on the screen. More than a bonus, this capability brings the device one step closer to being completely accessible for all: for the first time, the entire tour will also be offered in both American and Austrian Sign Language – and the TMW will add one more technical innovation to its spectacular collection! |
