Forest Experiments
Woodland development and artistic intervention in Sauen Forest
|
For tonwelt this is new territory – the first forest with its own audioguide. This innovation fits in well with the long history of experimentation in Sauen Forest. In 1912 the famous surgeon August Bier purchased the Sauen estate and began an interesting experiment in ecological forestry. He was able to turn a pine monoculture into a sustainable mixed forest – which is now a popular spot for excursions. The woods are also popular with students at the Berlin University of the Arts. Their artistic intervention ‘in the context of the trees’ is now part of the woods. In cooperation with the August Bier Foundation this has led to a unique, audio-guided forest walk, communicating nature and art to visitors of all ages.
